Janmashtami 2025: Makhan Chor called Vishnu avatar, read the story of Krishna’s Makhan theft

Every year Janmashtami festival is celebrated on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. This festival is particularly dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is believed that Shri Krishna was born in Dwapar Yuga on this date of almanac. Therefore, the child form of Krishna is worshiped on this day. This year, 16 August in Janmashtami is on Saturday 2025.

Lord Vishnu took many incarnations to protect religion and creation on earth. Shri Krishna is worshiped as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Kanha, considered as Vishnu avatar, composed many pastimes and got different names from different pastimes.

In this way, many names like Muralidhar, Gopala, Nandalala, Laddu Gopal, Kanha, Kanhaiya of Shri Krishna have been named, including Makhanchor. You must be wondering why Krishna, who is considered to be Vishnu avatar, was called Makhanchor. Let’s know the story of the theft of Makhan of Shri Krishna’s childhood.

In Gokul, Nandlal and mother Yashoda’s son Kanha was very popular and used to make a lot of Makhan at home and mother Yashoda used to feed a lot of Makhan to Kanha. But once Krishna went to his friend Madhumangal’s house and expressed his desire to eat something. Madhumangal started arranging some food for Kanha at his home. But he did not get anything. There was only stale kadhi at home, which she started taking Krishna for Krishna. But Madhumangal did not like it and he himself drank all the kadhi in the bush. When Kanha asked Madhumangal the reason for this, he told Kanha the whole thing.

Krishna said that I do not like such a weak and lean thin friend, you become strong like me. Then Madhu Mangal said that your mother feeds you butter milk every day. But my parents are poor. I never even ate Makhan. So Kanha told Madhumangal that I will feed you Makhan every day. Then Kanha along with his Sakha Madhumangal stole Makhan from the neighborhood house and started feeding him with him, due to which his name was Makhan Chor.

When the women of the neighborhood saw Kanha while stealing Makhan, Yashoda would come to complain to the mother and say that Maiya is very mischievous. He steals Makhan by breaking the matki of our house. At first, mother Yashoda did not believe her words. But once Yashoda also caught Krishna red -handed while stealing Makhan. Angry Yashoda said that why do you steal Kanhaiya Makhan? Then naughty Kanhaiya said with a smile- Maiya, I do not steal Makhan, but taste the taste of everyone’s house, so that it can be known whose Makhan is best.

The celebration of Dahi Handi after Janmashtami is also a symbol of this Makhan Chori Leela of Kanha. In which the hair of the naughty Kanha is remembered by breaking the matki.
