Every third school student across the country is taking private coaching and this trend is being seen more in urban areas, this information has been revealed by the Comprehensive Modular Survey (CMS) of the Central Government. The survey also said that the role of government schools is still important in the education system in India, where there is 55.9 percent of the total nomination.
The condition of government and private schools
According to the survey, about two-thirds of children in rural areas are studying in government schools, while in urban areas this figure is only 30.1 percent, while in private united (recognized) schools, 31.9 percent of children are studied across the country.
The survey is part of the 80th stage of the National Sample Survey (NSS), in which information was raised about the expenditure on school education, for this, data was taken from 52,085 houses and 57,742 students across the country.
Increasing trend of coaching
The survey found that 27 percent of students are taking private coaching in this academic session or have taken this ratio in urban areas, while 25.5 percent in rural areas.
Talking about the expenses, urban families spent an average of Rs 3,988 per student on an annual coaching, while this expenditure of rural families was Rs 1,793 on an average.
Increased expenses with increase in education level
- With the increase in education level, the expenditure on coaching is also increasing rapidly.
- Average expenditure at primary level: Rs 525.
- Average expenditure at higher secondary level: Rs 6,384.
- Coaching expenses at higher secondary level in urban areas: Rs 9,950.
- In rural areas: Rs 4,548
It is clear that the expenditure on coaching in cities is many times more than the rural areas.
Who spends the expenses of studies?
According to the survey, 95 percent of the students spending on school education said that the first major source of studies is their family members. This situation is the same in both rural (95.3%) and urban (94.4%), while 1.2%of the students said that the main source of their education is government scholarship.
Previous survey and change
Earlier in the year 2017-18, the 75th round of NSS was done on education but according to the officials of the Ministry of Education, its results cannot be compared directly to the current survey. The reason is that then Anganwadi centers were not placed in the category of pre-primary education and the expenses on coaching were also added to education, while CMS survey included the Anganwadi education and coaching expenses Counting in the category.
Total expenditure on education
It was also revealed in the survey that in all types of schools, the highest expenditure per student in this educational year was spent on course fees (Rs 7,111), after which Rs 2,002 was spent on books and stationery.
