E-mails, files and old photos will save water! UK government has unique appeal, know

Britain: Britain is currently going through the most severe drought situation since 1976. Five areas have been officially declared drought-hit while there has been a shortage of rainfall in six other areas for a long time. The UK government headed by the Keer Stmper made general suggestions to save water such as collecting rain water, fixing leakage, reducing bathing and avoiding the lawn water. But a shocking suggestion with these practical measures was also added to delete old emails and photos. The government says that data centers use a huge amount of water to keep their system cool and removing old digital data will reduce the pressure on them.

Objection of experts

Technical experts believe that this advice will not help much in practically saving water. Some data centers actually use water-based cooling systems but most water and energy consumption occurs in high-level computing tasks (such as running AI models or video streaming) and not to store years old photos or emails. Many storage drives remain in a passive state for a long time, which reduces their effect on water and electricity.

Experts also say that if the files are deleted on a large scale, then there may be additional energy and water consumption in this process, which can make this step upside down. Another important fact is that all the cloud data of the UK citizens is not necessarily a store in Britain itself.

If a user also deletes data and is present in the data center of another country, then the effect of water saving will be there and not in Britain. Since there is no such law in the country that forces the data to be kept on domestic servers, the effect of this advice can be limited.
