Recently the boom of Ganga and its tributary Magai in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh has caused huge havoc in Bhanwarkol and Karail area of Mohammadabad tehsil. The flood waters of the Magai River, which the local people call ‘Kosi of Bihar’ completely ruined the Kharif crop of more than 400 acres.
The aggrieved farmers and villagers allege that the district administration neither assessed the damage nor distributed relief material. On August 7, farmers filed a complaint with the IGRS regarding the absence and negligence of administrative officials in flood affected villages, but no action has been taken so far.
Waste of farmers
Recently, due to the rise in the water level of the Ganges river, the Magai river also came in spate, due to which many villages in Bhanwarkol and Karail areas were submerged. Paddy, maize, and other kharif crops suffered heavy losses due to water filling in the fields. Farmer Shivkumar Rai said that we had planted paddy by taking loans from banks, but the flood of Magai river drowned everything. More than 400 acres of crop was ruined. The administration did not get any help, neither relief material, nor any officer came to take care.
Accused of negligence on administration
The affected villagers say that they remained imprisoned due to water in their homes and villages for several days during the flood. Now when the water has reduced, the traffic started, but no Tehsildar, SDM, or Revenue Officer came to assess the loss from the administration. The villagers filed a complaint through IGRS on 7 August, but no response was received. The farmers reached the public darshan of the district officer and handed over the leaflets of their problems and demanded compensation and relief.
Action will be taken on negligence
ADM and disaster management in -charge Dinesh Kumar said that the damage caused by floods is going on and will continue even further. If for some reason the revenue officers do not reach the affected villages, then they will be sent there soon. On the delivery of relief material, he said that there is a standard for relief material. If the village does not come under the purview of that standard, then distribution would not have been done. It will be investigated, and if someone’s negligence is found, then action will be taken.
